Spiegelsee, Austria | 24.07.2020

A gem in the Schladminger Tauern, the Middle Gasslsee, as it is officially called, is more commonly known as the Spiegelseeis, simply because when the visibility is clear and there is little wind, the legendary south walls of the Dachstein are reflected in it. This spectacle is particularly appealing, because it is framed by blooming alpine roses from mid-June. On the 1st Sunday in July, the traditional festival of alpine rose blossoms takes place on the Reiteralm. But the Spiegelsee is actually in season almost every season. In early summer because of the already mentioned alpine rose bloom. In midsummer as a welcome cooling off after the sunny ascent. In autumn as a picturesque photo motif when the golden larches “burn” in the “styrian summer”. Due to its shallow depth, the Spiegelsee almost always has very moderate water temperatures. If you also want to swim the lake, there are a few plates at the south end for entry and as a photo platform. From there you swim straight into the rugged Dachstein south walls.
