Kaprun Hochgebirgsstauseen, Austria | 12.07.2020

The Kaprun Hochgebirgsstauseen (Kesselfallstraße 98, 5710 Kaprun) provide a (natural) monument that are hard to beat. You cannot drive up to the dams, but you have to park your car at a parking lot that is a 3 minutes walk from the ticket office. Parking is free, but the bus ride up the the dams are quite costly (61.50 EUR for a family of four). What you get for this is the 15 minutes ride up to the dams and the 15 minutes ride back. You can spend an entire day up there, the scenery is phenomenal and there is much to see.

Limberg II
The Limberg II power station was built during the years 2006 to 2011. With the extension of the existing power plant, a highly modern pumped storage power station was added. The costs were 405 million Euro. Limberg II more than doubled the output capacity of the Kaprun power plant group from 353 MW to 833 MW.

The Limberg II power station was constructed completly within the mountain and uses water from both existing reservoirs Mooserboden and Wasserfallboden to generate or store electricity. This extension was possible due to both reservoirs being built to adequate dimensions.

Kaprun’s “green battery”,  a power station that stores electricity with the assistance of water, has its roots in the 1930’s, 1940’s and 1950’s – and is nowadays more important than ever. The capacity to store electricity and have it availbale for use when required is the key to success in the utilisation of energy.
