Gramvousa/Balos, Crete | 10.08.2021

Balos Lagon is supposingly another one of those really nice beaches on the island of Crete. To get there, you can either hike, take a dirty gravel road and go by car or take a trip by boat. The boat departs from Kissamos harbour and is operated by Cretan Daily Cruises. It is advisable to reserve tickets beforehand, otherwise you might not end up on the boat that you were aiming for.

In summer, things can get very busy. There are long queues and lots of people not only on the boat but, as you might guess, also on the beach. The first stop is at Gramvousa, where you arrive approximately after an hour. To walk around the caslte, you have to climb an ascent up the mountain, which is steap and stressful, especially at 38°C in the midday sun. If you make it, you are presented with a beautiful scenery and view of the sourrounding cliffs and water.

  • Balos Lagoon
This Lagoon is another famous photo spot in Crete. It’s an hour drive from Chania. Prepare your wide lenses to get the signature Balos post-card photo.

The next stop is then Balos Lagoon, which only takes another 20 minutes or so. You can buy food and beverages on the boat, which is advisable, because there isn’t really anything much on the beach . The beach is partly sandy and partly rocky and you can tell that it is a touristy point. Even though it is rather clean for all those people that spend their days there, it feels a bit used and the sand is covered with pebbles.

After a few hours on the beach, the boat takes you back to Kissamos. The ride is quite nice with a very rocky scenery.
