Madeira | Levada do Caldeirao Verde | 05.08.2023

The trail begins at the Queimadas Forestry Park and winds along the walkway of the levada of Caldeirao Verde in the municipality of Santana.

The levada of Caldeirao Verde is an impressive work of art built in the 18th century that begins in the main stream bed of the Caldeirao Verde brook, and it carries water through the extraordinary Laurissilva Forest, classified as a World Natural Heritage by UNESCO from December 1999, until the farm lands of the parish of Faial.

After one passes through the four tunnels of the route, Caldeirao Verde appears on the left of the levada.

The Caldeirao Verde lake is formed by water that falls from the mountains by the monumental waterfall of 110m height, surrounded by abundant vegetation that makes it green.

If on chooses to continue to the Caldeirao do Inferno, one enters the more demanding section from the physical point of view. They are approximately 2200 metres, with a steep climb and tunnels.

The Caldeirao do Inferno is the best example of a very narrow and deep river gorge, resulting from the strong erosive action of water.
