Together with the equally high Sarpsfossen in Norway, the Rhine Falls is one of the three largest waterfalls in Europe. It is located in Switzerland on the territory of the municipalities of Neuhausen am Rheinfall in the canton of Schaffhausen (right bank) and Laufen-Uhwiesen in the canton of Zurich (left bank), about four kilometers west below the town of Schaffhausen.
